Hazel Grace Dunning, age 90, of Temple passed from this life during the late evening hours of Monday, June 15, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family. Born on the 24th day of August 1929 in Jackson, Minnesota she was the daughter of Fred and Grace (Jones) Hilbrand.

Hazel spent some of her childhood in Minnesota but at an early age she moved with her family to Weslaco, Texas where she would end up graduating high school there in the mid 1940’s. In the early 1950’s Hazel caught the eye of a young man, Paul Dunning, a Corporal in the United States Air Force. The two would be wed in Alamo, Texas in 1951 and spend the next 55 years together walking hand in hand, building a life and a family together that would eventually include two daughters. Hazel was an accomplished piano player and was highly creative when it came to sewing and fabric crafts. She was a homemaker for her entire life; her family and taking care of them was her main love. The love she gave to her family and the many works of fabric art she left behind will be the legacy she leaves for generations to come. Hazel has been in Temple since 1994 and she was a Christian.

She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents Fred and Grace as well as 1 brother Virgil Hilbrand. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her two daughters Carol Wallin and Ruth McLean both of Austin, two grandchildren Derek S. McLean of Michigan and Kelly McLean of Austin as well as one great grandson Maximilian McLean. One brother Merlin Hilbrand of Tyler and numerous nieces, nephews and friends are also surviving.

Hazel will be laid to rest Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 11 o'clock a.m. next to her husband Paul at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

Hewett-Arney Funeral Home of Temple is entrusted with the arrangements.
