Obituary

MILDRED “MITZI” EMILIE MARTHA LAXTON
(NEE LECHNER)
Mitzi died in a local care facility and joined the Church Triumphant on 9 February 2020, aged 83 years.
She was born on 29 August 1936, the eldest child of the Rev. Emil Henry Lechner and Mildred Eleanora Otte, at Blackwell, Oklahoma. She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Blackwell, and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kingfisher, Oklahoma, by her father. Mitzi spent her childhood at Watonga and Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and Arkansas City, Kansas, all pastorates of her father. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1954, and from St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas, in 1956. She worked as a medical secretary for the practice of Campbell, Morton, and Hinshaw in Arkansas City, for nine years before enrolling at the University of Oklahoma earning a BA in English in 1967, and her teaching certificate in 1968. Mitzi relocated to Pearland, Texas, where she taught English/Language Arts for 30 years at Pearland Junior and Senior High Schools, retiring in 1998 as chairperson of the English Department at the High School. In 1983, she earned the degree of Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, with additional certifications as a Supervisor and Mid-Management Administrator. She continued teaching after retirement on the adjunct faculty of Alvin, Texas, Community College and San Jacinto College South, before retiring a second time in 2003.
Mitzi married Dennis Laxton of Houston, Texas, on 28 April 1978, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Houston, with her father officiating. In 2003, the couple moved to the Temple area where they continue to reside.
Mitzi was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Kimberley Kay Lechner.
She is survived by her husband, a brother E. Theodore Lechner of Lawton, Oklahoma, two aunts, and numerous cousins.
Services will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, The Grove, 220 The Grove Road, Gatesville, Texas, at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 13, 2020 with a visitation starting at 9:30am. The interment of her ashes in the St. Paul Cemetery will occur in a private ceremony at a later date.
