Robert “Bob” Sodek, age 87, of Temple passed from this life during the evening hours of Friday, December 27, 2019 at a local care facility. Born on the 27th day of March 1932 in Ratibor, Bob was the son of Anton and Matilda (Naivar) Sodek.

Bob grew up and lived in Bell County for his entire life. He was a 1950 graduate of Belton High School. After high school he attended Temple Junior College for a year until he joined the United States Navy. Bob was a combat medic during the Korean War having earned numerous medals and ribbons as well as receiving a Purple Heart.

After Bob’s time in the service he caught the eye of a young lady named Sophie Hanusch from Barclay, Texas. The couple would make their union binding on May 5, 1956 at Salem Lutheran Church in Terry’s Chapel. From that time forward they would spend the next 63 years together building a life and a family together. Bob was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans of America (DAV) and a longtime member of the SPJST Lodge 47. Bob owned and operated Temple Tile for many years until his retirement in 1995. After retirement, Bob and Sophie would spend their days together with family and friends. They enjoyed taking trips to casinos all over the United States and playing poker with friends and family at home. Bob was a true outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and garden. Later in life he enjoyed playing video poker at home and spending quality time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved so very much.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents Anton and Matilda as well as his sister Leona Terrell and his brothers Ben, Butch, Jim, John, Frank and Anton Jr. Sodek.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Sophie Sodek of Temple, son Ron Sodek and wife Maria of Sugar Land, daughter Karen Bartek of Little River, daughter Janet Lyon and husband Butch of Bartlett and daughter Linda Rippert and husband Jim of Belton. Bob also leaves 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way.

A graveside funeral service will be held at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 2 o’clock p.m. with Pastor Peter Jackson officiating. The United States Navy Honor Guard will be present to render a final salute. The family will be accepting visitors at the funeral home on Monday evening between the hours of 5 and 7 o’clock p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to a charity of your choice in honor of Bob’s life.

Hewett-Arney Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
