Obituary

Theron “Butch” Gene Barnes, age 72, of Temple passed from this life during the morning hours of Thursday, March 12, 2020 at a Temple hospital. He was born on the 7th day of April 1947 in Temple to parents Theron Maurice and Wilma Jean (Quinn) Barnes.

Theron grew up and lived his entire life in Temple having attended and graduated Temple High School. After school Theron would serve his country proudly in the United States Army between 1968 and 1970. He was a veteran of Vietnam and he did receive the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and he received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Vietnam.

Theron was a man of great patriotism for his country, dignity to all that knew him and a man of great love for his family. He made a career as a salesman with Sears for many years and eventually retired from there. He enjoyed working on old cars, playing bingo and the monthly family get-togethers at William R. Courtney State Veterans Home where he spent the last years of his life. Theron never complained about anything even when there was much to complain about and his faith in God never waivered throughout all of life’s struggles and hardships. Family meant the world to Theron; the love that he had for his family and the great moral character that he was known to have will be the lasting legacy that will be passed down for generations to come.

He is preceded in death by his parents Theron and Wilma as well as 1 sister Sue Kopecky.

Theron leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 22 years Myra Barnes of Temple, son Joe Barnes of Temple, daughter Sharon Stokes and husband Mike of Temple, daughter Dawn Oxford of Temple, daughter Margie Birkes and husband Don of Moody and son Robert Goodman and wife Angie of Hewitt. He also leaves behind 1 sister Pam Beeson and husband David of Temple, a brother-in-law James Don Malicoat of Temple, a sister-in-law Mary Barnes of Carlsbad New Mexico, and 14 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 11 o’clock a.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with military honors. The family will be accepting visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday night between the hours of 6 and 8 o’clock p.m.

Hewett-Arney Funeral Home of Temple is entrusted with the arrangements.

We haven't seen Theron in many years. But I do remember the last time I saw him, sitting on his front porch just looking and just talking to me like he had just seen me the day before. He was always so nice, and funny. He will be truly missed. Prayers to Myra and the rest of the family.
